yesterday, I was at the mall with my friends, and unbeknownst to me, she stole something from the store. As she was showing me on the way out, I noticed a security guard behind us as we walked into another store and told her that they were following us. She threw it on the ground, and he approached ME and said that an employee said that she saw me steal something! I denied it, let him search me, and then the employee saw the bracelet on the ground and said I stole it. I had purchased something from the store, and asked why I would steal something when I'd just bought something? Anyways, to make a long story short, I was arrested. The employee would not say that she saw me steal it, but she did fill out a statement saying she did. Also, I kept asking the police to show me video footage of me stealing, and security never did. I don't think they had video surveillance. The police also kept asking me if it was not me, but my friend who stole it. I really think that they knew that she did, but wanted me to admit it. We look very similar, and my dad said that they could have easilly confused us. Or maybe they just wanted me to say it, but I told them that all I knew what that I had NOT stolen it. I was taken to jail and got out on a $200 bond. I have to contact the court within 10 days to set up a court hearing, and I'm really scared. I've never been in any kind of trouble before and have a clear record. I just want to know what to expect to happen. Should I have a lawyer? Will I be on probation? Is this going to be on my record forever? Should I keep telling them the truth, that I didn't steal it, or will that sound stupid? How much in fines and court costs will I expect? What should I do? Any help would be appreciated.
