Son Forged Check in Michigan
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Michigan
My son and his girlfriend were at my home for the weekend. While here, they stole a $100 check from me and later my son forged my signature on the back, had his girlfriend sign under that signature and cashed it.
I found out about it when the writer of the check called me because it had bounced, causing her a $30 over draft charge. The check was not to be cashed as it was a deposit that was no longer needed. However, I neglected to send it back or shred it, not thinking anything of it.
The blame rests with me but as my son is 20 and his gf also a legal adult, I told him he had 4 days (mail time) to return this money plus the $30 to me or I am pressing charges.
Sadly, my son has a history of stealing from me so it's time for tough love. My question is... how tough of love will this be? What will the maximum punishment be and what is the avg. punishment?
