My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Illinois, Florida
We live in Illinois. My 20-year-old daughter is living in Florida, working on at a quasi-internship arranged through her community college in Illinois. She is not getting credit for her work, so she is not considered a full-time student.
She was on my health insurance, through work (an Illinois carrier). She went to the emergency room a couple of weeks ago and incurred an $8,000 bill. I received notice from the insurance company today that they will not cover this because she is no longer part of the plan since she is not a full-time student.
Illinois recently passed a law that allows children up to age 23 (or 25) to stay on their parents' health insurance even if they are not. I mistakenly thought that the law went into effect 1/1/2009, but it doesn't go into effect until 6/1/2009.
My question -- who will ultimately be responsible for this medical debt to the hospital?
