Default Slapping
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Michigan

Last night, my ex showed up to pick up our daughter and flipped out because my new girlfriend was over watching a movie. Mind you, the ex and I have been separated since early summer of 2008. She made all sorts of ruckus and was hysterical. I went outside to talk to her because I was concerned about the safety of my child being in the car with her. We got into an argument and eventually she slapped me across the face. Without even thinking, I returned the slap. She ended up calling the police on me. They showed up and took a statement from me, talked for a bit, and left. I went down to the police department this morning to request a copy of the police report and was told I will receive a phone call when it is ready. She even called my mother and told her that I had punched her in the nose, which was a blatant lie. I'm assuming the same was said to the police, but I will have to wait until I get a copy of the report to find out for sure. Either way, she is the one that struck me first. What am I walking into, what are my rights, and where do I begin?

There is nothing that says you both can't be charged.

Please tell my your child didn't see this.
