Default Liability for Check Fraud
I was recently laid off. I received a check in the mail from my former employer. I deposited the check, assuming it was part of my severance. Another coworker who was also laid off got one too and also deposited it. The check was returned unpaid citing " fraud". I know the check islegal, I have the paystub with the water marks. If the company messed up and sent a duplicate check, am I in trouble? Do I have a right to the money if they did mistakenly send it?

If you didn't do anything wrong, you probably have nothing to worry about.
