Default Repaying a Fradulent Workman's Comp. Claim
My question involves workers compensation law for the state of: California

A number of years ago, I said I was injured at work when in fact I was not. My injury required surgery and the workman’s compensation claimed paid for it as well as some permanent disability. I have changed my life and am in a recovery program. I would like to pay the money back, but would prefer to avoid any criminal charges. Also, since the settlement was in five figures, I would have to pay it back in an installment plan. Is there any way I can settle my debt anonymously? How do I negotiate the settlement? The workman’s compensation case is closed.

Congratulations on working your way up to step nine.

You may want to start by talking to your sponsor about alternatives - such as making donations to organizations that help injured workers, or some similar worthwhile charity - in the amount you received. I realize that's not direct amends, but I believe you would actually do more good than by giving money to the insurance company. It also would avoid any legal entanglements.

Honestly, I don't know of any way to give money back to an insurance company that's not going to end up being directed to their fraud department. They're not likely to be sympathetic or understanding. You could simply send them a series of money orders, anonymously, until you've paid off the amount you received.

Agreed.

Find a charity or put it in the poor box or collection plate.

Good luck with your continuing recovery.
