Default Child Name Change After Paternity Test

My question involves name change laws in the State of: Missouri
This is regarding changing my sons last name. The sons mother denied that i was the father and when he was born gave him the name of her new husband, and had him put down he was the father. After several months i convinced her(threats of going to court) to get a paternity test and it showed i was. Now our son is about 4 months old and I am in the process of saveing up money for court to get some sort of custody but could i have his name changed to my last name once i am put on the birth certificate as the father??? Also i do want to get custody but i am a college student with a very small income. >3200 a year. How would this affect child support, which i have no problem paying, im just concerned if it will be more than i make and would threaten my schooling.

You may ask that the child's surname be changed in your paternity lawsuit. If the court finds that it's in the child's best interest, the court may order the child's surname changed. The child's surname has no impact on your support obligation. Work through the child support worksheet.
