    Default Shoplifting law question

Do store employees have to detain a shoplifter to prosecute them? Say I stole something, got in my car and left. Can they use my license plate number to track me down and arrest me? Im not even sure if i stole anything (i was drunk), but i had a lighter in my pocket when i got home.

I've gotten arrests by the police when the only way to track them was a plate, but it had to be a REALLY good case.....not a lighter. I wouldn't sweat it buddy, just be careful.

You can be arrested for the lighter but it is hardly worth the time to file the charges. Plus how embarrasing to call the police out for a $.97 apprehension. What a waste. What I would do is run your tag, find out who you are, and wait to get you on something better.
