My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: VA
I had incurred a medical bill in October of 2007. I didn't know if the insurance was going to pay it or not. The medical imaging place never contacted me about this bill. They never called me about it at all. How would you pay a bill if information was not disclosed on where to pay the bill? I lost my house in a foreclosure in January of this year, but when I moved, my phone number never changed. Since I hadn't heard anything about it, I presumed it was paid by the insurance. No mailings, no phone calls, no anything.
I got served with a warrant in debt recently at work. The people did not get my address change because they never sent a bill. I didn't update them because there was no contact or information of where to send a correspondence to. They just never spoke up. They didn't act expeditiously or anything. But now they spring this on me and I don't have the money to pay them. Now that they have served me with court papers they won't talk to me unless I pay them off and I don't have means to do it.
I'm afraid that even if I offered like half of it in good faith that they are going to try to garnish my wages. I stand to lose everything I have left if they do.
I'd like to know what I should do? I think it's awful that this total lack of communication happened. It could have been avoided if they had sent the bill to me promptly. I could have had them paid all off by now. My court date is 1-9-09.
