My question involves a roommate in the State of: Colorado
I am dealing with an ex-boyfriend/roommate that never paid rent. We were in this on and off relationship because he was discharged from the army and unable to find/keep a job.
The first place we lived together I moved in and was never added to the lease but paid the rent and utilities for 9 months primarily not to lose a place to live. It was my understanding that we would be splitting the rent. He left without any notice to move in with a friend before the lease had ended so I moved out and found my own place.
We were still communicating and still dating. His friend/roommate had a change in living situation and my ex-boyfriend needed to move in with me. We added him to the lease with the understanding he would have to find employment and pay half the rent and bills. He found a job but did not start paying for rent or utilities at which point I demanded he leave after not paying for the 3 months of rent he owed me.
He lost that job due to moving to a different city with the same friend. He found another job and reconciled with me and we decided yet again to try living together again with the same understanding that we would pay half the rent and utilities. Before moving in, he lost his job and his friends/roommates being under the impression that he was moving out would not let him stay with them. He moved in after some time found a job which he lost (prematurely) yet again due to putting in early notice about moving to another state that never came through. All compromises made relationship and rental wise were not followed through on and after another 7 months he moved out after an argument.
The total of 1/2 the rent, utilities, and bills not paid has totaled to $10,000. This does not include other expenses incurred from his habitation in the same dwelling. He has not moved his belongings out and will not tell me when he will be able to do so after 1 week. I am not sure if this falls under some sort of common law marriage thing, roommate, or domestic dispute.
I would like to recoup as much of the money as possible or I would be willing to keep items that would equate in value to the money I am owed.
If anyone can help I would appreciate it. I understand this is just a really bad situation of a relationship gone wrong and trusting someone to honor their responsibilities.
