    Default Opening Mail

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

I know it's illegal to open somebody elses mail. But, if you are a minor, is it still illegal if your parents open your mail without your permission? If it is, what can you do to make them stop? And can you get a P.O Box at the age of 16?

I am not an attorney and any advice is not to be construed as legal advice. You might even want to ignore my advice. Actually, there are plenty of real attorneys that you might want to ignore as well.

If you wish to rent a post office box, try contacting some private mailbox rental companies and see if they'll rent to you despite your age.

Your parents can also search you and your room at will, too ... they don't need your permission OR a warrant.

As I tell my children, "The 4th Amendment does not exist here."

And my favorite line from my then 10 year old son when we had a disagreement:

Boy: "This is my room! Get out!"
Me: "No, this is MY room and I let you sleep in it - YOU get out."

He slept on the couch that night.
