Default 16 Year Old Daughter Shoplifted Today

My question involves criminal law for the state of:California
My 16yr old daughter and her 18yr old boyfriend were caught shoplifting in a local grocery store. she had a $1.49 pepsi and he had a few red bulls and some meat for about $20. She was cited and released to me by the loss prevention officer and he was cited and released on his own. From reading the papers I rec'd today I will be getting a letter from the D.A.. But what kind of punishment is there for a first offense and does she need a lawyer??

She is facing criminal charges and a likely criminal record yes she needs an Attorney. Also "you" not her will get a letter of Civil Demand. This is a Civil fine between $50.00 and $500.00. Since she is a minor its you rplace to pay it. Its state law

Were you told she would have to appear in court?
