Mother Used Student Loans in My Name for Other Purposes

Hi, I have been attending college for the last 4 years I am on the verge of graudating. To make a long story short I have r4ecently found out that I owe over 160,000 dollars from various loans my mother took out with different instituitions!I never received a penny and I really struggled to make it through college. In fact I had to do illegal dealing for a little while to support myself. I signed and never questioned are looked into anything because this was my mom. I have believed for a whilke she has had a gambling addiction Im not sure. I think more than anything my feelins are hurt but what can I do?

As I see it, you can ask your mother to pay back the loans (and I mean "pay in full" - fat chance, right?), pay them back yourself, or report the fraud to the lenders and let your mother deal with the consequences of her actions.

Note that if you choose not to report your mother's actions as fraud now, down the road you are likely to have a much more difficult (and perhaps impossible) time avoiding responsibility for the debt.

Incidentally, it's not mommy's fault that you chose to deal drugs. Just like your mommy's fraudulent loan applications aren't somehow your fault. Grown-ups are responsible for their own actions.

What would it take to convince you?

I don't see how you could not report this as fraud. Your looking at a student loan payment in the ballpark of $1000 per month if not more (depending on the type of loan) for the next ten years. I also have no idea how you could have NOT known something was going on.
