Applying for SSI or Short Term Disability

I live in Gulf Shores Alabama. I have been out of work from august 17th to present. I was experiencing (grossly abnormal liver function) and diagnosed with Chronic Hepatitis C. What do I do now for my lost time? SSI says you have to miss work for a year.State Unemployment doesn't pay for people who miss work due to illness. What if I go back to work with reduced hours? I feel left in the dark I need info Please! Jason Bown

Do you have short term disability from your employer? I recommend that you ask your physician to put you in touch with a social worker (at least one in every hospital) who can help you with assistance programs available they are a great source.

I called my general manager today and he told me he "doubts corporate offers any sick leave or short term disability". So.... I'm back to square one, I can't find any help. But maybe thats how it goes sometimes. Anyway, just to add one more thing the company that won't help me is XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX almost a household name. They also do not offer us any health insurance. Which is interesting for a corporation that has stores all around the world. Jason

Substitute "interesting" with "pretty standard".

It isn't illegal to not provide insurance options. Crappy, but not illegal.

Unfortunately, yes I'm painfully aware that it's not illegal. But a little help in a dire situation where I almost died, shouldn't be to much to ask. I've never asked for a handout in my life. Jason
