Default Can't Pay My Debt, Leaving the Country
I have a serious financial problem. I have about $34,000 in credit card debt and cannot afford to pay it.

It was okay while my husband and I were working, but he's now in the final stages of cancer so, of course, his income has stopped.

There is no way I can handle this by myself. On top of this, I want to go back to my own country as he was the only reason I am here.

Can anyone tell me what will happen? Will they chase me? I'd like to negotiate a deal with the c/c companies, but I hear that takes months, which I don't have. I want to go home within days of losing him. I'm going to get a very small insurance payout, but that won't cover my debt.

Can anyone offer me advise.

Default Re: Can't Pay My Debt, Leaving the Country
If you go to another country, it is doubtful they will pursue you there for payment. However, most states (which you didn't give) when you leave them for another country will stop (toll) the SOL from running. If you come back to the US, particularly the state that you left, the SOL will start running again - they can still collect on the debt.

I'm sorry about your husband.
