No one on this site can tell you what happened and what your mother did. You are going to need your aunts help if you want to do this, I don't see anyway around it. It may have seemed that your mother signed a piece of paper and was done with it, but I promise you that it is not that easy.
There is also a huge difference between granting guardianship to an aunt bc mom was termanilly ill parent and granting guardianship to a family friend. Your not in an unsafe environment and shuffling a child around after the loss of a parent isn't in the childs best interest from a psychological point of view. Argueing with adults for a 17 yr old is totally normal behavior and is expected to elevate/escalate during he grieving process.
