Life Without a Social Security Number

Has anyone lived without one? I am seriously thinking of rescinding my number. I have found a form to file, If I'll be approved is another story. Why? well I personally never made the decision to sign up with this socialist program. Its voluntary! I understand life without one would be difficult. I'm researching as much as I can before making this decision. I'm not a tax protestor. I just believe that I shouldn't be forced into paying into a program that has no guarantee that I'll receive 100% of the money I've paid into it. Also SSN's are so commonly used for ID theft, which I heard is very hard to recover from. Opinions? Cite any laws please to help my research. I don't want to feel that I'll have to assume an illegal immigrant lifestyle because of this. Thanks!
