My question involves criminal law for the state of: California
me and a friend went into a vons, where upon he started stuffing his pockets
with candy, i noticed an unusually high amount of workers and started to become nervous, i have no idea how that made sense at the time but when i get nervous i drink (not necessarily alcohol, just anything liquid) so i stuffed a can of something (i didnt even look at what it was) into between my pants. as we walk out the store a secret shopper comes after us and grabs us both.
He handcuffs my friend while he only takes my drink and tells me to go away.
i think this has something to do with the fact that hes was on the sidewalk while i was about a foot into the street. Initially i just take my bike and leave but then i felt bad so i go back and wait for him outside the store. I saw him exiting about half an hour later carrying a paper which i suppose meant charges and his mom pulling up on her car. She immediately pointed at me and told me never to come by her house again (disregarding the fact that i was not in trouble) it sucked that he was being charged (fine probably) but i couldnt do anything about it so i locked up his bike (they forgot about it) and left.
then about an hour later my mom pulls over next to me an informs me that the store called her, informing her of the penalties for shoplifting and requesting she show up. Apparently my friends mom had given them my parents phone number out of spite because somehow it was my fault her kid got caught.
my mom decided against going and just took me home but the store does have her number. since i was initially let go and what i stole amounted to a WHOPPING $3. I think it has to do with me being already in the parking lot when i was aprehended so they might drop it. Im very worried as $250 is
alot to pay for a can of drink. Will they drop it or will I be getting a call from the cops?
