Church Sexual Abuse

Greetings,

I am doing ongoing research about Sexual Abuse/Molestation within a church. I became a proponet of the idea that churches should be held equally liable for leaders that molest children in their church as say a leader working in an after school program.

What legal resources are available regarding this topic? What are the current laws in this matter?

Obviously, as reported in the news, there have been a number of individual Catholic Churches who have resisted cooperating with law authorities when it has come to revealing information in its archives about priest who have sexually abused children in the church. How is the Catholic Church and other churches able to prevent the state from obtaining records from their archives to assist in their investigations?
