Default Credit Card turned over to collections
I lost my job about a year and a half ago. At that time I was unable to make the minimum payments on my cred it card. I paid what I could (it wasn't much) until they stopped accepting payments. I have been getting calls from the collection agency that my credit card debt was turned over to for the last 6 months. I finally called back when the agency started harrasing my ex-husband. According to the investigator I owe $23,000, she also stated that this a felony. She offered me some options but states that I need to pay $7,000 immediately. I have tried to obtain another loan to pay the amount but have been turned down by numerous resources.

First question: Can they call my ex even though he is not legally responsible for the debt?

Second: Once it's been turned over to collections besides the phone calls and letters what happens next if I can't pay back the debt?

Third & Fourth: Is it a felony? Am I looking at any jail time?

Default Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
You should read this article on the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. It sounds like the investigator is violating that law.

Thanks for that information. It will come in handy, the next time they call. However, I'm still very anxious about the whole matter and would appreciate an answer to the questions I posted as well.
