Default Must All People With Driver's Licenses Carry Insurance

My question involves a driver's license issued by the State of: Kansas

Some friends and I had a conversation over insurance issues in Kansas. It started with a friend whos car was totaled out in a non injury accident. She had full coverage on the vehicle and when the car was totaled by the insurance company and not having another vehicle to put insurance on she felt no need for insurance and cancelled the policy.

2 months goes by and she purchased another vehicle and it is all paid for and an older model vehicle so she went looking for liability insurance for the new car. The quotes she is getting is unreal..(over $400.00) to get insurance started again because she had allowed the insurance to drop or she stopped it and had no insurance for a short time. I have never heard of having to have insurance for NO VEHICLE. Why would you have insurance for a car if you dont own one? If one must carry insurance even if you dont own a vehicle wouldnt it have to be some sort of law that indicates the you have to have insurance for a drivers liscense?

One person in the discussion said that if you have a drivers liscense you have to have insurance. I dont recall any of this in any drivers ed class or any where else other than in a discussion. Any thoughts or laws or ideas on this? Thanks.

There is no requirement that you must carry auto insurance merely because you hold a driver's license.

what are you going to insure if you do not have a car?

If she did not have insurance at the time of the accident or anytime during the time the car was registered, there is the probability of hiigher rates or surcharges but other than that..

she had already rescinded the registration for the car when she dropped the insurance, right? If not, the state will see it as having a registered car and no insurance.

maybe her rates are higher because of a chargable accident against her record.

After the wreck the car was signed over to the insurance company and the debt on the car was paid off. I have a good agent and had her call him for better rates. I also had to call him and asked about her insurance coverage and what he said was....had she of been his customer he would have told her to drop it down to the minimum coverage for the state of Kansas NOT drop it completely. Since she dropped it completely, she was without insurance for about 2 months she was UNINSURED and therefore she will always get the higher rating for at least 6 months for the time of no insurance. Her former insurance agent should have told her that as well. I just dont know why a person would be required to carry insurance if they dont have a vehicle and thats typically what she was charged more for.

As you've been told, she is not required to carry insurance when she does not own a car. The issue of how her insurance company rates drivers, or when her insurance company offers discounts or imposes surcharges on its premiums, is a separate issue.

Well my thinking exactly...why would I have insurance if I dont own a car at all? Must be a backaswards Kansas deal to make the money for whatever reason is all I can figure out. Thanks

Only certain States require you to show proof of insurance to get a license. In a lot of States if you own a vehicle, your own policy covers you driving other people's vehicles who you do not reside with. If you live with say, your folks and drive their car, you need to be added to their policy but if you drive your friends car, your own policy covers you. If you don't have a policy yourself, you can always purchase a "non owner's insurance policy' to cover you driving other people's vehicles.
