My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

I was charged of petty theft in Costa Mesa. I have just turned 18 at the time of offense. I was charged with a theft of an item of $20 or less and this is my first offense. I have made the worst mistake in my life and I have learned a very valuable life lesson. I am just scared of what my consequences are for my crime and what I should expect.

What are the consequences of my offense?

Should I get a attorney (of which I can in no way afford) and do I need one?

Would this offense stay on my record and would this have an affect in my employment opportunities?

I was also wondering if it would be wise to plead not guilty instead of guilty.

What would most likely happen during an diversion program and when can I ask for it?

Would it also be a good idea to just complete my sentence upon the first hearing and just apply for expungement/dismissal later on?
