Question Can A 16 Year Old Date An 18 Year Old
My question involves juvenile law in the State of: Ohio

i am a 16 year old. my parents are divorced and i live with my mom, step dad and sister. both my mom and step dad are abusive both mentally and physically. they leave my sister alone but are horrible to me. My dad and i dont speak and the only place i can go to get away from the abuse is my boyfriends. he is 17 right now but will be 18 on july 4th. we will have been dating for 2 years on june 29th. i really dont want to break up with him. are there any laws peventing us from dating if he is 18 and i am a minor but we are less than 2 years apart in age?

thanks

First off there are no laws that restrict "dating" its when sex or sexual contact (not just physical) that laws apply. Also if the minors parents say no contact then age of consent wont even apply its no contact!

The law does not dictate who may and may not date. The law dictates who may and may not have sexual contact with each other.

However, and this is more to the point, the law also gives parents the right to say who their minor children may or may not see. So if your parents say that you may not date him, then you may not, even if the law does not object.

If mom and dad say no, it's no. End of story. NOTHING in the law is going to force a parent to let their minor child see or have any contact with someone they do not want him or her to have contact with. NOTHING. Mom and Dad win EVERY time.
