    Question Will I Get Hired?

My question involves a background check in the State of: IL

Two years ago on Valentine's Day I went out to dinner with my boyfriend and the restaurant was BYOB so we brought a bottle of wine and I got smashed. Then we had to stop at a Safeway and pick up some items. I was drunk and being stupid and ended up shoplifting. I got caught and the security guard went through his procedure and I apologized and he said I can't come back to that store. Fair enough. What a foolish thing to do. Anyway, a month later I get a letter from a Safeway lawyer and they sued me, I guess?, for like $600. I was able to pay it off and I didn't have to go to court or anything so it seemed like it was handled privately. Forward to today, I had an interview for a job at a grocery store and I desperately need the job and want it. They do conduct background check and I am extremely nervous that the situation will show up. Will it? I mean, the letter said that I would have to go to court if I didn't pay it but I was able to. Is that going to be on my record? Can someone give me some information about what to expect? Oh and apparently the store I am trying to get a job at uses PeopleWise Background Check...

    Thanks so much!

No, what you received was a civil demand letter from the store. This did not become part of your criminal record.

However, that does not guarantee that you will get hired. It only means that the information in question is unlikely to show on a background check. It does not mean you are guaranteed a job.

There is a national retail data base that contains nearly 45,000 applicants with records of theft…most of whom cannot be found in standard public records because they were never prosecuted. The stores report the theft to it. It contains exclusive information shared only between members. (member stores)

Unless the store is a member & does a check of this data base, your record should not show up on a background check.

Where can I find out more about this alliance? What stores are in it?

    Google "National Theft Database".

    Several THOUSAND retailers subscribe.

Basically, when you shoplifted, you made the decision to never work in retail again.

    GOOD! hardy har

I did Google "National Theft Database" but it only comes up with companies that provide the service. Can I find out which retailers subscribe? And if not, why can't I find out?

I don't know why you think I am joking.

I have over 20 years in retail and/or consulting to retailers about best practices and processes.

I have run several hundred of these checks myself and trained others to run tens of thousand more.

If your name pops on NTD, you would automatically go to the bottom of the applicant pile... if you are even allowed in the pile anymore.

Most retail theft happens internally. Hiring an admitted thief is like letting a fox into the henhouse.
