Reentry After Being Denied Entry Over Visa Waiver Violation

I would like to ask a question: I am italian, living in Italy, but in 2002 I worked as music teacher in Usa for some months under the condition of VWP (because I had a boyfried there, so I was trying to collect money to pay a lawyer to try to get a h1 visa so that I could work legally), but unfortunatly during my last travel I was questioned to SF airport and to make things shorter I did confess I was working even though I figuered in Usa a a tourist (with the visa waiver program -90 days max to stay)..Of course I tried to explain as better as I could, but with a load of shame and embarass I really felt bad Before getting deported back to Europe the same day, the policewoman told me that I lost the possibility to come back to Usa with the VWP but I could only after getting a regular visa from Usa embassy in Italy or if I knew anyone who could sponsor me. They took fingerprints, photos etc. and they printed into my passport a sentence like "you must obtain a new visa to enter this country again" and I didnt hear anything about banning or something like that.
The matter is: will I have to get a visa anyway till the day I'll be dead if I want to come back to Usa? If yes, will it be hard to ask a touristic visa for example to the embassy due to prior problems? Did I lose forever the possibility to come to Usa with the VWP?

Yes. You cannot use the visa waiver program anymore.

Not necessarily. As long as you don't lie when you apply (and don't lie, immigration WILL find out), you should not have any problems with a tourist visa.
