Default Resolving Elderly Relative's Credit Card Debt
Grandma got several credit cards in the mail - I activated them for her, as requested, and we went shopping like crazy. Hell, she's 93 & deaf and shopping made her happy. She even allowed me to get some pretty nice items for myself. Both her and I intended to put our money together to pay the monthly charges. She with rental property funds, me with upcoming Social Security Disability. Well, as our luck would have it, I have to wait until late January/February for my SS $ and she had a stroke, lost her leg, vision and alot of speach. All the rental money she makes goes to homecare for her now and hospital bills, etc. So, the 5/6 Credit Card companies are calling from 8am until 8:55pm 7 days a week. I have spoken to a few and told them what's going on but they call back the following day. Is there anything I can tell these people???? I'm a wreck as it is without having them call 4/5 times a day. I know we owe them money but stuff happens. We are unable to make a payment at this time - in 2 months, sure but NOT NOW! My Grandma well-being is more important. I feel bad because I know her credit rating is plummeting but what can you do? Can they attach her Social Security Check??? How about the home we live in? It's hers - paid up. I'm getting nauseus thinking about it all!!!. I tried to get a loan but no go for me OR her. ( Her delinquencies have effected her credit) Dear God! So, What is there for me to do? Should I continue to ignore the calls - I never know what to say and when I do tell them the truth they say they are sorry but call back later!!!! One collection dude even sugested that I get Power of Attorney and handle it ALL myself!!!???? huh????? Will the credit card companies wait until next year to get those payments rolling in again or are me and my Grandma going to be featured on the late NEWS?
I'm scared -and she doesn't understand yet...PLEASE, SOMEONE, offer some assistance for us. I even thought about calling a Credit Counceling Agency but figured that wouldn't work because she would need to sign something and is unable to even move her arms, JEEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! H E L P !!

BTW, not that I'm
thinking of anything bad but what happens to owed $ to credit Cards when the cardmember passes away???? God Forbid!
I think Suzi Orman said - the debt dies with the soul as far as credit Cards??? Seriously, I'm not real sure she's gonna pull through this and I don't wanna have to have power of attorney and then have them come after me....what to DO??????? H E L P !!!!!!!! S O S
thanks boryzark again  :x

Default Excessive Credit Card Debt
Usually when I hear of a situation like this, it is a younger relative taking intentional advantage of an elderly relative, draining their bank accounts or running up charges, with the elderly relative unaware of what is happening or afraid to say no. That fear can come from a variety of causes - ranging from fear of abandonment to fear of violence. Often the elderly relative has diminished physical and/or mental capacity. Of course, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Realistically, at this point your grandmother needs a conservator ("guardian of the property") appointed to manage her financial affairs and to resolve her problems with the credit card companies. You may be able to get suggestions through the Legal Aid Senior Legal Hotline at 1-800-999-8904.
