Raising Business Money By Asking For Donations

My question involves business law in the state of: Florida

I am interested in obtaining money for an energy invention via donations on the internet. I dont want to go through Venture Capital, banks, and investors. If I am Raising funds like this, do I have to file with States and what is it called. It isnt a charity and I am not selling securities just asking for donations.

Any good book or material I can look up that will help.

I don't know of a good how-to guide for soliciting gifts (what some call "begging"), but people do it. As long as you're not out on the street corner, I'm not aware of anything that would stop you from soliciting gifts.

Your main problems will be actually getting the donations, otherwise as far as I know they simply would be considered gifts on your taxes. There's nothing you need to do past that. Good luck!

You may want to take a look at one of the Lesko books (most libraries have them for free).

As an investor I would kick myself in the ass if I gave someone $1000 and their idea made them millions. People want something for nothing all the time and you are going to have a hard time getting gifts even from friends.

What's in it for me? What's in it for society? Is this really an innovation that can change the world? (Not all hippies are poor and some would be happy to fund a world-changing innovation unless you are the "Radioactive Boy Scout")
