Out Of State Car Purchase

My question involves vehicle registration or title in the state of: PA

I am buying a car that is currently in Maine; I am in PA. I want to get the title transfer and registration done in PA, then go to Maine and drive the car home.

The current owner needs to sign the back of the title in front of a notary, correct? After they mail me the signed/notarized title I will be able to register the car without the seller present, is this also correct?

They need to sign the title as required by Maine law. I can't see the title from here, but the odds are pretty high that instructions are printed right on the title instrument. I don't see anything online that indicates that notarization is required.

Just following up...

I titled and registered the car yesterday. Having the title signed in front of a notary probably wasn't necessary, but there was no cost to have it done; better safe than sorry. I did have to take the car to an inspection mechanic for VIN verification.

I found the PA DMV website rather confusing, so I thought this reply may help someone in the future.
