    Default Caught Shoplifting at Macy's

I was caught shoplifting at Macy's. I was arrested and was given a summons for a court date next month. The officer said I would probably be given community service since it was my first offense, however, I'd like some advice. I gave incorrect information to Macy's, which were then given to the police (address, no S.S. #, etc...) So how should I go about coming clean to the court? Also, how does it work? They give you a lawyer? Would it be better to consult someone else? I'm afraid of what might happen. Are you supposed to plead guilty to the charges? What is the worst case scenario? If anyone has any advice/input/or recommendations for a lawyer, let me know as soon as you can.

    Default Incorrect info to court

When you go to court, tell the staff at the criminal clerk's office that you need to give them an updated address, then provide the correct information. Odds are, that will rectify the address problem without any further problem.

If you qualify for an appointed lawyer, you can petition the court to appoint one for you. Otherwise, you can hire a lawyer. It is generally a good idea to consult a lawyer, particularly for a first offense, as there may be a way to avoid a criminal conviction. First offense shoplifters are usually punished with probation, a fine, and possibly some form of community service or participation on a work crew.

Not going to court will mean that you'll get into more trouble, not less - a bench warrant will almost certainly be issued for your arrest. And the charge won't go away.

Possibly. You should consult a criminal defense lawyer who is familiar with immigration issues before entering a plea.
