Default Effect Of A Released Federal Tax Lien On USPS Employment

Does anyone know if the US Postal Service will bar employment(not inspector/police or highly compensated job) based upon a released federal tax lien appearing on a credit report/consumer report?

Is there a difference in CRA reporting or from an investigative consumer report standpoint between a federal tax lien that is withdrawn vs. released?

How do HR people in general, not just USPS, view the existance of such a record on a prospective employees record?

Notice of Federal Tax Lien (approx $250K )was filed in July 2005 and released in May 2006 after the liability was shown not to exist. IRS then issued a Certificate of Release of Federal Tax Lien. My understanding is that it will appear for 7 years from the date it was reported released - is this correct?

    Thanks in advance.

I scrounged around for an answer over the weekend and came up dry, so I gave up today and asked my mail carrier.

Jim says he doesn't think it matters if the lien is released. It's the ones that aren't that get looked at askance (and even then, it's not necessarily an automatic bar to employment).

He said to be prepared to answer questions about it, and be forthright if asked.

    Thanks Missy.

I couldn't get any official info either. Talked to a few postmasters and they pretty much had the same thoughts as the carrier you talked to. Their thoughts were that HR might simply ask for an explanation if it came up on a background check.

Thanks again for looking into it though. I appreciate the effort.

I think the only thing you are going to be told postively (even if you called their HR dept. & asked) is that each case is considered on an individual basis.
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.
