How Long Does Review For SSI Take

hi-i am hoping someone can help with my questions. i have a child (age 24) who has been awarded SSD benefits. she had to wait 5 months but because of lung cancer became eligible right away. we also applied for SSI and was denied. she had over $2,000 in the bank because of a benefit that was held in her name. that is fine we understand. i sent copies of bank records that showed bank account balance as of 11/30 was all the way down to $400. now that she has had no money since then ($300 rent was due 12/1) how long does it take them to review SSI? First SSD benefits/check is due to her on 3/28/08. Does it take this long for them to review bank account statements that show there is no money and how is she to pay for things if she has no money since 12/2/07? What type of money if approved is she looking at getting if and when approved for SSI. We do not support her except buy her food during this time cause she lives on her own.

No one will be able to answer this with any certainty. Could be months or years. Your best bet is to get an attorney as this tends to speed up the process.

What type of money if approved is she looking at getting if and when approved for SSI.

We have no idea but the person taking care of her claim should (case worker).

I hate to come across as competely pestimestic here but your dealing with a system that is a COMPLETE mess. If she is awarded back payment she will be entitled to any funds from the date of original claim. Just bc she gets approved doesn't mean that she will get it in any kind of timely manner. I would make other arrangements if she is counting on this money to survive. SSD may also just be temporary. Get an attorney and I can't stress this enough.

i have contacted our senator on this issue and hopefully he has enough pull to help, i hope. she can not afford an attorney on this issue. put it this way, the lung cancer is a return of another cancer to a point that it is not favorable so disability is going to be forever. as for SSI, they told her on the phone that it is in review and that was 2 weeks ago.

Have you applied for food stamps and medicaid as yet? I applied for the stamps for him. Since my son had 0 income and 0 assets,he recieved them within 5 days of applying.
They can be applied for on the computer now. It is easier than it was years ago.
