Default School collection on credit report even though it was paid
I paid for a "repayment of financial aid" in july of 2003
almost a year later i receive a letter from a collection agency stating that i have not paid this dept and that if i do not they will file with the credit agencys.
i went to the school to get this fixed. and thought that they did but they did not on my credit report it states opened on 10/2003
paid 8/2004 reported 8/2005 as charge off.
I called the school and they say there is nothing they can do, and i should be happy it says paid on my credit report.
i called the collection agency and they say well maybe i was before july. or maybe it was for more than i paid. (but it says on my credit report $226 and my credit card statment says $226.
so what do i do?
is this legal?

Default Paid Debt & Collection Agency
If the debt has been paid, and the credit report reflects it as paid, write a letter demanding that the collection agency verify that the debt is paid.
