What an employer can see in a background check depends entirely on how thorough a check is done. Not all background checks are created equal.

Without knowing what KIND of job you want to obtain, it's impossible to say. A DUI would probably not cause a problem for some kinds of jobs, though it might eliminate you from contention as a deliveryman or the chauffer for the CEO

cbg it is an HR position and what do you think about the disorderly conduct. Also do these pharmaceutical companies look at your convictions are your arrest records. I am a different person from who I was 10yrs ago. The friends were no good, I have changed my life around, and now it seems like my past will come and haunt me. What is the max amount of years an employer can go back?

There is no hard and fast rule as to who or what industries look at what. Some companies do, some companies don't and it's not determined by industry. The pharmaceutical company you want to work for might look and it might not. There's no way to say in advance for sure. The only one who can give you a hard and fast answer is the company itself.

If it were me, I wouldn't be concerned about one DUI ten years ago. I doubt most companies would. But I can't carve it in stone for you.

An employer can go back and look at the grades you got in fingerpainting back in kindergarten if they really want to. However, in NY, an employer may not deny employment based on a conviction unless it relates directly to the position. So the chances that this will be harmful to you are slim unless their HR people are required to do a lot of driving.

I'm not sure (per OP's 1st post) if they are still in NY where they got the DUI conviction 5 yrs. ago or currently in NJ. However; even if they are applying for a job in NJ, NJ also only considers conviction records if they are related to the job applied for. (private sector employers)
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.
