Default The Incredible, Disappearing Debt
Here's an interesting situation my co-worker finds herself regarding her Target credit card. She charged about $400 and was surprised to discover on her next statement that her bill was up to $850. The extra $450 in question were charges originating in Torino, Italy. She called Target and they told her that it could be identity theft or it might just be that someone did a phone order with their own card and punched in the last digit wrong and her card got charged. That sound highly unlikely, but you never know. Target told her that they would investigate the matter and deduct the charges from the bill if she was not liable.

A week later, she gets her new statement and the Torino charges are gone, but so is the $400 debt that she personally accrued. I told her that I thought she should contact Target and inform them of this since I'm pretty sure that she's still responsible for her own portion of the card debt. Is she still responsible for the debt?

Q: Is she still responsible for the debt?

A: This is a joke, right?

Allow me to rephrase: What is her best course of action here?

Answered by symbol or in less than three words...I wouldn't accept legal advice from you any other way, Judge. You might want to consider answering questions with emoticons, too.

According to her, it's very recent. Both sets of charges were removed from her bill this past cycle, which was at the end of January.

I would guess they are still investigating and most likely her bill will be adjusted when they are through.

However, it is possible they made a mistake.

Personally, I would call them and inform them of the mistake (if that is what it is), but that's just me and probably SJ.
