    Default Newspaper Article

I'm in the state of Florida. So this Friday I got a call from a local newspaper asking me if I would give them my side of a story they were working on. I didn't respond to the call. Instead, I e-mailed the editor that same day asking that the newspaper publish neither my full name, my last name, nor my picture. Come Monday, they publish that anyway. Granted, the editor is the highest ranking employee of the newspaper, that he had 3 days to check for that e-mail, and that this could ruin my opportunities for future employment. Also, the university police never shared with me that they were disclosing my police report information to the newspaper. What rights do I have?

    Thank you,

    Sean

It's not defamation to publish your name.

It's not defamation to publish your picture.

    So what's the defamation?

I'm not saying that it was, but I had sent them an e-mail asking them to not publish my last name and any other information associated with me. They were able to access my police records so easily, whereas I had a harder time. Don't I have a right to privacy? Don't I have any rights?

If the story is newsworthy, they can run it. Crimes are newsworthy.

Police records are public open records. Any citizen is entitled to copies of any open public records. All they have to do is ask for them.
