Possible Reduction of Careless Driving Charge in New Jersey

I have had my license for 4 months and recently I hit a tree on the side of the road. I was not exceeding the speed limit; I was actually 5 mph under, although it was wet out. On a turn my car skid over a sewer grate and I lost traction, started skidding towards a row of trees. I tried to counter the skid but only made it worse by jumping the curb and hitting a tree with my right hand fender. I had to get a tow because my tie rod snapped and thus had to call the local police. The officer was very brusque in manner and issued me a Careless Driving ticket with a description of ‘too fast for conditions’ on it.

What are the chances of getting the 2 points taken off my record? Should I plead guilty or not guilty? Many people have told me that because this is my first offence and I have had my license for so short a period of time the judge will most likely take off the points. I haven’t the money to hire a lawyer and I don’t really know how these things work. Any court etiquette/advice/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

No one here can do more than guess. The judge will either decide to give you a break or he won't.

Show up, dress well, be polite, use "yes sir" and "no sir" when questioned. If you feel you weren't being careless, plead "not guilty".

You can pay an extral 250 and get a no points ticket. Check with the clerk of court.
