Uninsured And Hit Another Possibly Uninsured Driver

Hello, I am new to this board and have a reasonable problem sitting before me.
I am driving an uninsured truck. Upon backing out a month ago I hit an older man on his passenger door, smashing his window and scraping the paint for about three feet down. We both agreed that there were no injuries and that the police didn't need to be involved. No report was filed. The man is from portugal and speaks poor english.

I am aware that I am at fault and am a fool for not insuring the vehicle. His friend ended up coming and after getting frustrated due to lack of interpretation, I agreed to write a check for 2 grand. I later canceled the check because I felt that the damage was less than what I caused. I later gave the man $500.00 when I received an estimate from a mechanic friend of mine for the window. The gentlemans car is older and bluebooked at less than 2000.00. The man called me later and is requesting more money. He wants 1500.00 more. I refuse to pay this. We communicate very poorly and his friends "translate for me" I also have a strong suspicion that his car also lacks insurance and that the car might not even be his!

What am I up against? and Do I have an obligation to pay more? Legal actions against me?

You hit him. If you don't pay him for the damage you caused, he can sue you.
