Default Employee Theft and Background Checks

Hi. Last week, LP came to our store to interview all of the employee because they caught an employee stealing. When they talked to me and asked if i have ever taken anything. I said that the other day it got really busy in the store and i forgot to pay for a slim jim worth about a 1 dollar. They then made me sign a paper and say that i forgot to pay for a slim jim. After they fired me for taking it without paying for it. I pay for the slim jim back. Now I'm worried about it being on my record. I'm applying for a new job and i'm guarantee the job. I'm sure they'll be doing a background check and all. They got me to sign the paper a week ago. Should i be worry and if it's on my record what options do i have. I'm 21 and live in the state of Illinois. Thank you for your help!

    Same thing. North Carolina.

So far I have found that NC law states that the charges must be dismissed before you can apply for expungement, I did not go to criminal court.

deus3xmachina and I signed a "Notice of Civil Demand." At the bottom of the form, it states: "These penalties are allowed by law as settlements of a civil action and are not in lieu of any criminal prosecution that may be imposed by local authorities."

The company I worked for reported my acknowledgement (me signing) to some background check company and now every time I apply for a job it pops up.

How can we seal this--as promised by the loss prevention representative that told us it would be okay?

Please start your own new thread - it gets confusing when two questions by two different posters get posted under the same thread.
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.

It's according to how thorough of a background check that is done by a prospective employer whether it will show up or not. All background checks aren't equal.

However, if your former employer is called by a prospective employer for a reference, they may tell the prospective employer the reason for your termination.

Deus unless criminal charges were filed there is no record. However if new job contacts old employer they can tell them you were fired for theft
