Default Establishing Paternity
My son was told by a one-night stand that she is pregnant. He does not know if he is the father and the child is not due until early September. What steps do we take to determine paternity? Should he stay away from her? Talk to her? We live in Virginia.

After the baby is born someone will have to initiate proceedings to establish paternity. Until then there is nothing you can do. As for staying away, it depends on whether he wants to have a relationship with this person regardless of paternity.

Be prepared. The system seems to take forever to serve papers on the parties in parts of Virginia. I too have an open case and have been waiting since Dec 10th for the DCSE to serve papers on the mother to prove if I am the father.
