Default Determining Your State of Legal Residence

I have come accross with the question ask what is my state of legal residence and when did I become legal in that particular state. This question has been tough to me to respond as you can see my situation:

I lived in michigan for three years, and I transfered to Illinois to finish my bachelors where I stayed in the dorm for one year. After that I decided to move out of dorms and live with family where I am not in the lease but I pay them my rent monthly. At this time, I still use my box number from school because I don't want letters to be delivered to this appartment for privacy issue. Therefore, my residence address has not recorded anywhere. Mailing address is the one that serves as my home address.

Back to the issue of michigan, I used to use the same address I had before while my roomate was still there. Now, I don't use it anymore and I have informed postal services to forward all mails to this box number in my school. Right now I have work study and last year I filled my income tax return here in Chicago.

I am still not sure if after graduation I will go back to michigan or if I should stay here.

What is my state of legal residence?

For FAFSA (loan application from the government) and application for graduate school.

Is it possible for one to have two US states of legal residence?

    Default State of Residence

If you are trying to qualify for in-state tuition, you will have to check the policies of the university.

For loan applications, you should use what you consider to be your permanent address.

    Thanks for your clarification

One more question, is it possible to claim two states at the same time? Can I say that I am resident in both michigan and Illinois?

    Default Dual Residency

Well, sort of. A student who goes out of state to attend college may well be domiciled in his state of origin, while residing in the state where he is going to college, arguably making him a "resident" of both states. But even under those circumstances the student would typically be regarded as a legal resident of his state of origin, due to his continued permanent domicile in that state.
