Default Credit Card Fraud in California
A friend of mine stole a card at work and used about $700-$1,000 worth of value.
What are the charges or sentence will the person who get caughts just get fired, serve jail or anything even worser if they had no previous criminal record? Would it help if the person who purchased everything, returned everything back to the store? This is in CA.

They will probably receive probation and fines. Making full restitution in advance generally helps.

They should get help from a criminal defense lawyer.
