Collecting Both Unemployment And Severance

Can you collect unemployment benefits while receiving severance pay, or do you have to wait until severance ends? Would forgoing unemployment benefits be a common requirement for accepting a severance package? This doesn't apply to a specific case I have in mind, but for argument's sake, assume this was a termination without cause and took place in Ohio.

In Ohio, you are required to inform Unemployment of any severance you receive If severance takes the form of salary replacement, you should expect that your unemployment benefits will be reduced in the amount of the payments.

I find it interesting, however, that you added a qualifier for the form of severance. Why wouldn't all severance be considered "salary replacement"?

Wouldn't any money you received from your former employer, beyond vacation or sick time due, be considered salary replacement?

States have their own arbitrary lines about severance pay. No, not all severance is wage replacement. Factors states can consider include whether it is paid in lump sum or over time, whether it stops if you get a new job, and whether it must be repaid if you are rehired. (I am speaking generally here, not describing Ohio's standards.)
