Default How Long Do You Have To Press Charges

I have a friend that hit someone. It has now been 5 days when this happen. They both work together and it did not happen at work. The person hit is not telling my friend if she comes to work she will have charges brought up on her. How long can you wait to bring charges on someone for assalt and battery?

They have as long as the statute of limitations to report it. So, the victim likely has one year or more (depending on your state's laws) to start the ball rolling. However, the longer the person waits, the less likely it is that the police and the DA will take the matter seriously if it does finally get reported.

You can always call the local law enforcement agency and ask ... they may not tell you, but, they might.

The police usually come looking for the accused! As they will have to be arrested and processed! (Picture and finger prints) If they cannot be located, a arrest warrent will be issued, and eventully the accused will have to answer to the charges.
