Default Responsibilty of Authorized User on Credit Card

This is going to sound horrible but.... 4 years ago before my husband and I were married, I opened up an American Express credit card to help pay for wedding expenses, etc.... I put him on as an authorized user , but never told him about it. ( I am the primary card holder ) He never activated his card, I never even gave them his Social Security number... The card was at 0%. I then got sick went in the hospital. Cards were paid late interest rate went up to 30% and for the past 3 years I have been at that rate, therefore my balance has not gone down. They put me collections . This nasty collector has been harassing me . I have still been making payments directly to American Express every month but he is insisting on the balance getting paid off in full.... Insisting I transfer the money to another card ( that I don't have ) etc....... The collector has now tracked down another # for my husband , and has been calling him telling him he is responibe for the bill .... BUT he never even activated or used his card .... Is this legal and is he responsible for paying ??? Please let me know what recourse I have with this nasty collector as well...... Oh I am in New York.

You can write a letter to this collector requesting no more phone contact and ask that all communication is in writing.

Your husband should assert that he has no responsibility for the debt, and ask that there be no further contact with him. You may wish to review this article on the FDCPA, and getting a collection agency to stop calling.
