Am I Legally Married?

My husband and I live in Florida. We got married in Honduras. We followed all the country's laws and rules to get our marriage license. When we returned to Florida, I sent my license and all other information to the govt to change my name on my passport, which was done.

Now that we are going through a divorce, he says our marriage wasn't legal to begin with, even though we filed taxes jointly as a married couple, and the government recognizes us a married legally, or they wouldn't have changed my name and issued me a new passport. Please help- he says our marriage is not recognized in Florida.

As long as the marriage was legal in Honduras, it is also legal in the state of Florida.

florida does not recognize a common law marriage so everything depends on whether your marriage in Honduras was legal. Your husband can challenge and a Florida court will rule. Even if the court rules against you, you will still be entitled to an equitable division of property. You need to retain an attorney.
