Default Driver's License Renewal With an Old, Out-of-State Ticket

I attempted to renew my driver's license and was told that The State of North Carolina had reported a problem with my driving privileges. I was directed to call NC to clear the problem. NC stated that I received a citation in June of 1982 that was still on their books. They did not have a computerized system at the time and will have to request microfiched record. I do not remember if and what the citation was and if I paid. I definitely don't have a record of paying. What are my options?

North Carolina should be able to explain how to pay the fine(s) necessary to retore your driving privileges.
