Private investigators checking on SSDI recipient

hi, this is a hot topic on a couple of disability issues forums, and so i 'd like to clear it up if possible.

are there ANY circumstances in which SS will use a private investigator to investigate a person who's on SS disability? or perhaps if the person is being considered for SS disability?

there are several people who are very certain that this does happen, has happened to them. our thoughts are, that perhaps someone reported their claims as fraudulent and therefore their claims were investigated by contracting a private company to do it?

several others believe that this only happens with private LTD claims and compainies, never with SS.

In my experience the SSA uses law enforcement to investigate possible fraud. I suppose it is possible that they might use private investigators in some cases.... how do you prove a negative?
