I Think The Judge Made A Mistake In Granting a Restraining Order

I live in New Mexico. I was in a fight with my drug addict brother in law, whom I have never lived with and have a distant relationship with. I never threw a punch, just defended myself. He went to court and obtained an order of protection. The judge never asked our relationship, just granted the order. Is this proper? I understand if I don't appeal this, I can never obtain a hunting license or own a gun. What is anyone's advice?
