    Default No Certificate of Occupancy

    New Jersey

I rented a property near Rowan University this house is a frat house so you can picture what it looks like but anyway. the landlord has been telling us all summer that he has done renovations and everything like that which he has but we paid him for 3 months in june so he had all summer paid in full before sept. The renovations have taken all summer. we could stay there but there was painting going on plumbing and all types of other stuff. on fri the 17th the landlord says hes getting the place inspected so i call him at night he said it passed and everything is alright. Last night i am there on the 21st and the cops come and say that the house never got the Cert of Ocupancy and we cant be there...The landlord said it will be fine by monday... What should i do..Thanks alot i am really confused about this becuase the guy knows that we will be partying there and everything like that but on the same token is his freedom to party enough to take this abuse

If there's no certificate of occupancy he cannot legally rent to you. Demand a refund of the rent, and if he doesn't pay, sue him.
