Asked For Information On Credit Report Item - What Next?

I noticed an item on my credit report. When I contacted the collection agency (I asked for information about the account because it was not familiar to me) I received no response, but a few weeks later another agency sent me a letter indicating that they now owned the account, but the balance was different. I asked agency #2 to send me information about the account because it was not familiar to me. Agency #2 responded by telling me again that they purchased the account from agency #1. In my letter I asked for 'compenent evidence bearing my signature, showing that I have some contractual obligation to pay you'. What can I do now to find out what this account is? Agency #2 appears to feel they have answered my question by telling me they purchased from agency #1, but agency #1 never responded to my initial request for information.

They don't have to provide you with a copy of your signature on a contract.

Okay. What can I expect them to provide as I don't think this is my debt? So far they have only told me that they purchased from another collection agency and that agency never responded to me. If this is mine, I want to pay and resolve it, but I don't think it is.
